Note: Although Theater occasionally hires from outside for Mar-Mam positions, most often we promote internally from our Guided Marine Life Tour area. Because of this, when hiring for GMLT, we may still conduct a swim test.
Surface dive: Surface dive 18ft to the bottom of the pool and retrieve a rock

Misc: Dive into the pool Sprint to the middle of the pool freestyle Pull yourself out of the pool only using your arms 20 military pushups Carry 2 buckets of water across the stage and back. Many chances to complete each step.
Surface swim: two lengths of the freestyle (about 250 feet).
Time: 80 seconds
Underwater swim: one length of the pool (about 125 feet)
Dive in/ push off: either
Surface dive: Dive into the water from a platform about 5 feet, swim to the middle of the Dolphin Discovery show pool, then dive about 25 feet to the bottom to pick up a small weight. Swim back to the main show platform and pull yourself out without sitting on your butt or landing on your knee.

Misc: Carry two buckets filled with water and ice a certain distance and up a couple of stairs. This test is done in water about 58 degrees with no goggles.
Misc: Dive off 6 foot platform tread water 5 mins with hands out of water Pull yourself out of water onto 1 foot or knee( you lose points here) The pool you take the test in is the white whale and dolphin stadium in approx. 60 degree water
If you pass each part of the test you will be granted an interview with a panel.
Surface swim: freestyle swim two laps (approx. 220 ft.), monitored for form, stamina and distance.
Time:
Underwater swim: one lap (approx. 110 ft.), monitored for form, distance and your ability to pull yourself out of the water using your upper body strength.
Dive in/ push off:
Surface dive: approx. 24 ft and retrieve a weight
Weight: 3 lbs
Mic test: Read a short passage from an existing show script. You will be monitored for clarity of your speaking and reading skills and your confidence of delivery.
Grade point/ pass or fail: Grade point - 80/100
Misc: Dive into a pool approximately 12 ft deep from 4 - 6 feet above the water. You will be monitored for form. Tread water for 5 minutes with your hands above the water, monitored for stamina. 68 degree water temperature.
If you do not pass the test, you are not eligible to try out again for a minimum of six months. Sea World's employment representative will contact you if you are being considered for a re-test. If you pass the swim test and complete an interview, a Sea World employment representative will contact you within 2-3 weeks to inform you of the results.
Surface swim: Swim 400 yards (1200 ft). Doesn't matter what stroke, doggy paddle if you want.
Time: 20 mins
Underwater swim: 25 yards (75 ft)
Dive in/ push off:
Surface dive: Swim about 10 yards, go down 12 feet to retrieve object, back up and swim back the 10 yards

If you pass, then the dive eval is performed in the same warm swimming pool. Be able to put your scuba gear together properly and when in the water, achieve buoyancy At the bottom, remove mask, give to dive officer, retrieve mask and clear Doff BC, turn off tank, ascend to surface, descend back down to gear, turn on tank, don gear Buddy breathe with buddy
Freestyle approx. 160 feet, monitored for form, stamina, and distance

Mic test: given a subject to speak about for thirty seconds, monitored for clarity of your speaking and confidence of delivery.
Grade point/ pass or fail: Grade point - 80/100
Misc: Monitored for your ability to pull yourself out of the water using your upper body strength. Tread water for about five minutes, monitored for stamina.
If you don't pass, you are not eligible to try out again for a minimum of six months. A Discovery Cove employment representative will contact you if you are being considered for a re-test.
If you pass the swim test and complete the interview, a representative will contact you within 2-3 weeks to inform you of the results.
