Virginia Aquarium

No swim test.

Need to be SCUBA certified.

Theater of the Sea

Surface swim:
freestyle swim into middle of lagoon, breaststroke back to float

Time:

Underwater swim:
underwater breath hold swim towards boardwalk as far as you can go

25 feet, retrieve a piece of algae

Dive into the water from the float (we are looking for pointed toes, feet together, graceful dive)
Tread water for three minutes, doing requested behaviors (one hand over head, spinning in a circle, both hands up, etc)
Footpush back with dolphin and perform an elevator where dolphin assists you either on to your bottom, knee or foot onto float(optional)
Pull yourself out of water by yourself

Note: Although Theater occasionally hires from outside for Mar-Mam positions, most often we promote internally from our Guided Marine Life Tour area. Because of this, when hiring for GMLT, we may still conduct a swim test.

Surface dive:
Dive into the water from a platform about 5 feet, swim to the middle of the Dolphin Discovery show pool, then dive about 25 feet to the bottom to pick up a small weight. Swim back to the main show platform and pull yourself out without sitting on your butt or landing on your knee.

Carry two buckets filled with water and ice a certain distance and up a couple of stairs.
This test is done in water about 58 degrees with no goggles.

Sea World Orlando Animal Care

one lap (approx. 110 ft.), monitored for form, distance and your ability to pull yourself out of the water using your upper body strength.

Read a short passage from an existing show script. You will be monitored for clarity of your speaking and reading skills and your confidence of delivery.

If you do not pass the test, you are not eligible to try out again for a minimum of six months. Sea World's employment representative will contact you if you are being considered for a re-test.
If you pass the swim test and complete an interview, a Sea World employment representative will contact you within 2-3 weeks to inform you of the results.


Sea Life Park

Surface swim:
freestyle around the main show pool (approximately 250 ft)

Navy marine mammal program

Swim about 10 yards, go down 12 feet to retrieve object, back up and swim back the 10 yards

National Aquarium in Baltimore

Surface swim:
swim length of the main pool frestyle and along the way, haul yourself out on the center slideout and dive in and finish the swim
